Transcatheter Tricuspid Repair: Expanding Options for High-Risk Heart Patients

January 24, 2026

Severe tricuspid valve leakage is a common heart problem in older patients and can lead to breathlessness, leg swelling, and frequent hospital admissions. Many of these patients are not fit enough to undergo open-heart surgery, which has led to the development of less invasive, catheter-based treatment options.

Transcatheter tricuspid repair allows doctors to fix the leaking valve through a thin tube inserted into a vein in the leg, without opening the chest or using a heart-lung machine. Studies show that most patients treated with these devices experience a clear reduction in valve leakage, feel less short of breath, and are able to walk and carry out daily activities more comfortably within weeks of the procedure.

For patients who were previously considered too high risk for surgery, transcatheter tricuspid repair offers a safer and more practical treatment option. As the technology continues to evolve, it is expected to play an increasingly important role in managing complex valve disease in vulnerable patients.
